Utility Planning for a SunShot Future: Best Practices for Incorporating Distributed Solar into Utility Planning

Researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, with advising from a diverse group of leading national, regional, and state organizations, have identified best practices and innovative tools for incorporating solar energy into electric infrastructure planning. Learn how they conducted a comparative analysis and evaluation of recent resource plans, to provide lessons learned from other states. They will provide a sample of plans, which includes over 20 recent integrated resource plans and 15 regional transmission planning studies across the U.S.

    The SunShot Initiative has a number of programs and activities to accelerate solar deployment for low- and moderate-income communities, nonprofits, and other public-serving organizations, including a proposed prize competition, a national partnership, and many others.
  • 12:00PM: Stephanie Kline, SunShot Collaborations and Impacts on Department of Defense Goals
    This session highlights the ongoing collaboration between the SunShot Initiative and the U.S. Department of Defense through a number of programs to dramatically impact defense initiatives and goals, such as resiliency, climate change, and energy assurance.
  • 12:30PM: Christian Philipsen, Best Strategies for Applying to SunShot FOAs
    Applying to SunShot funding opportunities can be intimidating to many. In this session, SunShot staff will deconstruct the application process and offer insights about required steps, documents, evaluation criteria, timing, selection, award negotiation, and announcements.

    The Orange Button Initiative is an industry-driven program designed to drive down transaction costs and enable a solar data economy. Come learn how the Energy Department and industry partners are working to build the next generation of solar energy data.
  • 1:30PM: Ammar Qusaibaty, Solar Data Ambassadors
    This session is an overview of a new initiative by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to establish and manage a network of data ambassadors in 10 innovation hubs and cities around the nation.

New Projects

Photovoltaic Research and Development

SunShot announced 19 new projects under the Photovoltaic Research and Development (PVRD) funding program. The projects are focused on improving the power conversion efficiency, fielded energy output, service lifetime, and manufacturability of commercial and emerging photovoltaic (PV) technologies. PVRD is dedicated to larger, collaborative teams that lead projects with the potential to produce dramatic progress towards a solar levelized cost of energy of $0.02-0.03 per kilowatt hour by 2030. Learn more.

Technology to Market 2

SunShot announced 21 new projects under the SunShot Technology to Market 2 (T2M2) funding program. The projects support the development of tools, technologies, and services that will significantly reduce the costs for solar energy systems across all technology areas. This funding program fosters and accelerates the development of innovative and impactful technologies and businesses working to reduce the levelized cost of electricity for solar. By leveraging America’s entrepreneurs and businesses, the Energy Department will ensure new products and business models have the best chance at having a positive impact on reducing the cost of energy from solar. Learn more.

SunShot Systems Integration: Advanced Solar Forecasting

SunShot plans to release a funding opportunity announcement in the coming months for up to $10 million, seeking projects that improve solar irradiance and power forecasts and accelerate their integration into energy management systems used by utilities. Learn more.

SunShot plans to release a funding opportunity announcement for up to $25 million this year to improve PV module and system design, including hardware and software solutions that facilitate rapid installation and interconnection of PV systems. Learn more.

SunShot plans to release a funding opportunity announcement later this fall for as much as $30 million to accelerate the commercialization of products and business models that drive down the cost of solar energy. Learn more.
