One of the things that we tend to do as leaders is focus on our core business and not necessarily focus on all the things surrounding our business that yet affect who we are, how competitive we are, how people view us. One of the nice things about energy intensity and focusing on reducing it is it’s one of those topics that everybody can support.
Footage of a poster with a cartoon earth saying, “Turn it off, End of Shift, Lunch time,” followed by a poster saying, “Better Plants Challenge, U.S. Department of Energy,” followed by footage of a person turning pressing light switches.
The Better Buildings/Better Plants Challenge was to reduce our energy intensity by 25% over ten years.
Footage of a man and woman sitting in a lunch room with vending machines and a television, followed by footage of a man plugging in a computer monitor.
What surprised us was, by focusing on it, by engaging the employee base, and looking for places that we were missing—and we had a lot of help from the Department of Energy in doing so—we were able to identify and save more than that in a little over two years.
