Battelle Memorial Institute is conducting manufacturing cost assessments of fuel cells for stationary and non-automotive applications to identify the primary cost drivers impacting successful product commercialization. Under a five-year cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Fuel Cell Technologies Office, Battelle is providing an independent assessment of fuel cell manufacturing costs at various volumes and alternative system designs. This report provides cost estimates for the manufacture of 100-kW and 250-kW fuel cell systems for combined heat and power (CHP) and primary power applications. Both polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell stacks and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks are considered. This report identifies the manufacturing costs of fuel cell systems using scale-appropriate manufacturing processes at annual production volumes of 100, 1000, 10,000 and 50,000 units.
