The U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) will present Federal Thought Leaders Roundtable, a First Thursday Seminar scheduled for June 2, 2016, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

First Thursday Seminar features FEMP Director Timothy Unruh, who facilitates a round table discussion among senior agency officials on cutting-edge topics related to federal sustainability goals, policy, and initiatives. Panelists will review innovative project case studies and share insights and strategies for replicating them. Video project case studies will include:

  • Integrated Energy, Water, and Materials Systems: Charles McC. Mathias Laboratory, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center
  • Deep Energy Retrofits Achieved through an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC): GSA New Carrollton Federal Building; Lanham, Maryland
  • Energy Reductions of 50% Using Dynamic, Intelligent Technologies: Smart Labs Initiative; University of California, Irvine.

This course will help learners:

  • Recognize opportunities for deep energy retrofits funded through an ESPC
  • Assess high-performance energy, water, and materials systems and integrated technologies
  • Identify smart building automation systems that reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

The panelists for this First Thursday Seminar are Dr. Timothy Unruh, director of FEMP; Christine Harada, federal chief sustainability officer for the White House Council on Environmental Quality; Kevin Kampschroer, chief sustainability officer at the U.S. General Services Administration; and Lisa A. Jung, deputy assistant secretary of defense for installation energy within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations and Environment.

After completing a course evaluation and multiple-choice assessment, participants will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible for continuing education units.

First Thursday Seminars are designed for federal energy and facility managers, but are open to all individuals through the FEMP Training Catalog. Courses are hosted in partnership with the National Institute of Building Sciences' Whole Building Design Guide.
