Communications Director Karla Olsen oversees a team that develops and executes a broad range of communications and outreach activities that ensure the general public, as well as key stakeholders, can identify with the Office of Energy Efficiency (EERE)'s broad technical programs and achievements. Currently, Karla is on detail to the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy.
EERE's Communications Director manages the day-to-day operations in Communications, including EERE's traditional and social media presence, Web enterprise, executive and internal communications, inquiries and correspondence, and other related activities. Karla previously served as EERE's Deputy Communications Director.
Karla has more than 10 years of communications experience in the energy industry, having served as Director of External Affairs for NRG Energy (formerly GenOn Energy), a wholesale electric generation company in the Pittsburgh area; as Manager of Public Relations for EQT Corporation, also in Pittsburgh; and as Director of Corporate Communications for Westar Energy, Kansas' largest electric utility. Prior to her corporate communications roles, Karla worked in television news as a reporter, producer, anchor, and Assistant News Director at TV stations in Columbia, Missouri; Asheville, North Carolina; Wichita, Kansas; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Karla holds a Bachelor's in Communications and Sociology from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and a Master's in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. A Milwaukee native, Karla joins her brother in working for the Federal government in Washington, D.C.
