There are many ways to add links in the Energy.gov Content Management System.
Adding a Link with the LinkIt Dashboard
You can use the built-in LinkIt dashboard to link to Energy.gov pages. This technique will not work outside of Energy.gov.
- Go to the page (also called a node) that you want to add a link to and choose the Layout mode.
- Go to the body field that you want to add the link to by choosing "Configure" for that block of text.
- Select the text that you want to link (if you're linking text) and click the "Link" button.
- If you're linking an image or feature, find the "Link URL" section and hit "Search."
- Type the name of the page you want to link to.
- Choose the page you want to link to from the drop-down menu.
- Click "Save."
Be aware that pages may share similar names. If you want to be sure to link to the right page, link by node ID.
Adding a Link with the Node ID
Alternately, you can link directly to a page using its node ID. This is convenient when there are many pages with similar names and you want to ensure that you're linking to the right page.
To find a page's node ID from outside of the Energy.gov CMS:
- Open the web page that you want to link to in a browser.
- Right-click anywhere on the page.
- Select "View Page Source." (The wording may differ based on your browser.)
- Search (Control + F) for "node/".
If you are logged into the CMS, you can use the alternative method of finding a node ID:
- Open the web page that you want to link to in a browser.
- Select any tab at the top of the page besides "View" (e.g., Edit or Layout). The URL for that tab's page will have the node ID included after "node/".
The first result should be a URL that looks like /node/, followed by a number. Copy the node/NUMBER. (For example, the EERE home page is node/28747.)
To link to a node ID:
- Go to the page (also called a node) that you want to add a link to and choose the Layout mode.
- Go to the body field that you want to add the link to by choosing "Configure" for that block of text.
- Select the text that you want to link (if you're linking text) and click the "Link" button.
- If you're linking an image or feature, find the "Link URL" section and hit "Search."
- Paste the node ID in the "Link" field. Be sure to include the "node/" in front of the number.
- Click "Save."
Adding a Link to an External Website
In some fields you can link directly to an external website by following the steps above and pasting the URL in the "Link" field.
However, some paragraphs—like listing paragraphs—cannot link to external websites unless you first create an external resource for that URL. To do this:
- Create an external resource by choosing Content > Add Media > External Resource.
- Give the external resource a descriptive title and summary. Remember, the title and summary will appear in the listing paragraph.
- Paste the external URL in the "URL" field.
- Save the external resource.
This will create an item that you can link to by headline / page name with the method above.
