The STEP Campaign aims to accelerate the adoption of smart diagnostic tools that help ensure quality residential HVAC system installation and maintenance. The campaign provides a platform for technical assistance and access to key resources, such as guidance on implementing best practices for contractors and installers, utility incentive programs, case studies, and lessons learned. 

Organizations including contractors, educators, tool developers, distributors, utilities and energy efficiency organizations, weatherization agencies and others that can play a role in using, or advancing the use of smart diagnostic tools to ensure quality HVAC installation are eligible to join the campaign. Joining the STEP Campaign is free. In addition, there is no cost to your organization to access resources, technical assistance, or submit for recognition. 

Benefits include access to resources, including guidance documents, case studies, utility incentive lists, and educational webinars to help aid the adoption and use of smart diagnostic tools.

Types of campaign partners vary, so it depends.  

  • HVAC contractors whose technicians use smart diagnostic tools can help build the body of knowledge around smart diagnostic tools and best practices for implementing smart diagnostic tools into their business practices.
  • HVAC educators and associations can train on, develop curriculum for, and encourage the use of, smart diagnostic tools. 
  • Utilities and energy efficiency incentive programs can inform the STEP Campaign of incentives they provide, best practices for implementing smart diagnostic tools for quality HVAC programs, and any information developed (e.g., reports, white papers, and guidance documents).

As a Campaign Partner, you are eligible to receive technical assistance with questions that may include: assessment of tool capabilities, best practices, how smart tools can be used in weatherization, how to implement smart diagnostic tools in Quality Installation and Maintenance programs, and more.
