Lead Performer: Ashwin-Ushas Corp. – Marlboro, NJ
DOE Total Funding: $149,988.39
Project Term: July 2, 2018 - April 1, 2019
Funding Type: Small Business Innovation Research

Project Objective

This project will develop novel, auto-darkening electrochromic technology for window applications. This technology can be used in a retrofit capability with press-and-apply electrochromic panels that can be easily applied to existing building windows, and will add no more than 40% cost to the existing building windows.

Project Impact

Cooling living space accounts for more than 70% of U.S. buildings’ electricity use, costing more than $380 billion per year. Of this, about 35% (~$130B) can be attributed to losses to cooling. With auto-darkening windows, energy for cooling can be greatly reduced without an impact on visibility, while also providing a peak-shaving opportunity.
