DOE Tour of Zero: Vision Hill Lot 1 by Mandalay Homes
You are here
Mandalay Homes built this 3,181-square-foot home in Glendale, Arizona, to the performance criteria of the U.S. Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) program.
This one-level high-efficiency home meets the criteria of the DOE ZERH, ENERGY STAR, Indoor airPLUS, EPA WaterSense, and LEED for Homes Silver programs.
Tiles combine with stone to form pervious surfaces that provide outdoor living spaces while reducing the amount of irrigated lawn. Drip irrigation and drought-tolerant plants further reduce the need for irrigation.
Clerestory windows and extra-wide sliding doors flood the interior of the home with natural daylight.
The home has ENERGY STAR appliances for energy and water savings.
The master bath has an exterior shower, which helps keep steam and moisture out of the home.
To educate buyers and realtors about zero energy ready home innovations, Mandalay Homes uses information displays, equipment displays, an interactive “energy wall,” equipment modeling, and building deconstruction displays in its model homes and sales offices.
Open house events and tours help inform potential buyers, sales staff, students, and other builders of the features and benefits of DOE Zero Energy Ready Homes.

”We made a 100% commitment to DOE Zero Energy Ready Homes. No matter where you go in our developments, regardless of the price point, everything we build meets a HERS 50 maximum. We have been working on perfecting this for three years now. Most of our homes are coming in at 46 to 47, whereas a year ago it was 48 and 49. This a result of better craftsmanship as the trades understand better how to get the most out of the products and technologies we are using.”
