The Building Technologies Office (BTO)’s Emerging Technologies program has announced the availability of up to $1 million for the Buildings University Innovators and Leaders Development (BUILD) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) DE-FOA-0001167. This FOA makes available competitive, two-year cooperative agreements for U.S.-based university teams to research and develop innovative building energy-efficient technologies, manufacturing (for projects developing hardware), and commercialization.

The BUILD FOA consolidates two previous pilot projects, the Max Tech and Beyond program administered by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Building Innovators program administered by the BTO. The BUILD FOA will also include a significant manufacturing focus that was lacking in those programs.
The lead institution must be an institution of higher education, which includes, but is not limited to, universities, two-year community colleges, and predominantly undergraduate institutions. The lead institution can choose to team with external partners such as a manufacturer or a government laboratory, but an external partner is not required at the time of application.
The final funding amount is subject to congressional appropriations.
