The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced two new manufacturing prizes as part of the Manufacturing Innovator Challenge, an effort to crowdsource solutions for next generation manufacturing, to increase energy productivity and strengthen America's industrial base. The challenge is being launched in partnership with Freelancer.com.

The Advanced Manufacturing Office is sponsoring one of the prizes that seeks new applications for large scale additive manufacturing for disaster response.

NOTICE OF INTENT: Funding for New High Performance Computing for Manufacturing

AMO, in partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, announced the seventh solicitation for the High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) program. This is the first joint solicitation between the DOE-funded HPC4Mfg Program and the High Performance Computing for Materials (HPC4Mtls) Program. Federal funding of nearly $5.7 million is available to support multiple new awards. AMO plans to announce the funding opportunity in November 2018.

White House Announces Strategic Plans to Push American Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing

On October 5, the White House released its 40-page report outlining paths to strengthen America’s manufacturing sector. The report describes how the U.S. can take leadership roles in developing new technologies, training the manufacturing workforce, and expanding the domestic manufacturing supply chain.

Within the strategic plan, a wide variety of AMO-supported projects were highlighted including: Manufacturing USA institutes, Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Programs, Advanced Manufacturing Traineeships, and Industrial Assessment Centers.
