Steven Simonson is the Director of the Office of Analysis and Evaluation within the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Enterprise Assessments.  The Office provides analysis and evaluation of the Department’s safety and security performance in order to target EA assessment and enforcement activities at areas exhibiting adverse trends or representing potential emerging issues, and to keep DOE leadership informed of potential threats to mission accomplishment.

His previous position was as the Director of the Office of Enforcement, responsible for implementing the Department’s safety and security regulatory enforcement functions, the goals of which are to enhance and protect worker safety and health, nuclear safety, and classified information security through compliance with the associated regulatory requirements.  Mr. Simonson has also served as an independent oversight team member and team leader participating in integrated safety management evaluations, emergency management inspections, emergency management exercise evaluations, and nuclear safety inspections at various sites in the DOE complex.  Prior to becoming a federal employee, Mr. Simonson held a variety of field technical and project manager positions for a government consulting firm and in the commercial nuclear industry in the operations, training, engineering, and assessment areas over a 20-year span, including extensive experience in integrating accident analyses, emergency operating procedures, and initial emergency response actions.  He also served as an officer in the engineering department of a U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarine.  Mr. Simonson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Toledo.
