To facilitate research and policy activities that enable energy programs with common technical challenges to work together toward solutions, the Energy Department supports interagency crosscutting initiatives. The Subsurface Technology and Engineering Research, Development, and Demonstration (SubTER) Crosscut addresses major technical and socio-political issues regarding energy production and storage and the management of energy waste streams in the subsurface. This fact sheet summarizes the challenges and scope of the SubTER Crosscut.

To learn more about SubTER, visit the Energy Department's website and read about a recent scientific study on subsurface issues.
