Subsurface energy sources constitute 80% of our national energy supply. The Energy Department is committed to discovering and harnessing subsurface resources while mitigating impacts of their development through a new Subsurface Technology RD&D (SubTER) Crosscutting team. In collaboration with the Energy Department's national laboratories, the team will address key challenges around a central theme of "Adaptive Control of Subsurface Fractures and Fluid Flow:"

  • Discovering, characterizing, and predicting
  • Accessing
  • Engineering
  • Sustaining
  • Monitoring

The Subsurface Control for a Safe and Effective Energy Future is a recently released white paper that addresses use of the subsurface for energy generation, storage, and energy waste disposal.
