Every newcomer to the Department of Energy falls in love with our 17 national labs. ED Director James Campos was no exception when he recently spent a full day at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

PNNL in Washington State conducts research and develops technologies to address pressing issues like cybersecurity, and develops cool technologies like self-healing cement so sidewalks can “heal themselves”.

All 17 national labs at the Department of Energy deliver exciting science and technology. But they also work hard to get students excited about STEM careers. It can be difficult for students - especially minority students - to imagine the world of possibilities in science and technology.  What kind of jobs are available, really? Do they hire people like me? Igniting that first spark of interest is key. And so is keeping that spark alive by making sure minorities and women feel included and respected as they access internships and jobs.

PNNL Director Steve Ashby recently joined his colleagues from all 17 national labs at a Diversity and Inclusion workshop organized by the National Laboratory Directors’ Council.

 On September 25, the Honorable James Campos toured the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He received a briefing on STEM, diversity and inclusion at the lab. Other highlights included traveling to the Bioproducts Sciences and Engineering Laboratory and visiting the Advanced Battery manufacturing facility.
