intern Andrea Candelaria from Puerto Rico

Hello, Andrea Candelaria here! I am a rising junior at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo majoring in broadcast communication with an emphasis in film production.

Some projects that I’ve done as part of my coursework include writing scripts and assisting with two radio programs—focused on arts and culture—for my radio production class; I even had the opportunity to interview Grammy award-winning Puerto Rican singer Ileana “iLe” Cabra for one of the programs. This past semester, I shot and edited numerous two-minute videos for my television production class and helped produce a virtual half-hour TV program as a final group project, since classes were moved online due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

I was given the opportunity to be a MEISPP intern for the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity this summer. As a member of the Equity & Diversity division, I assisted in research projects, formulated a new diversity and inclusion plan, and helped with the LGBTQ Pride Month Special Emphasis Program in June.

MEISPP is my first internship experience; even though it was done in a virtual format, this internship gave me the tools and knowledge to further develop my professional career. I’ve improved my research skills, learned about the different diversity initiatives in other federal government offices and universities, have become familiar with using meeting applications for video conferences and webinars, and I’ve gained confidence in my skills and abilities.

My hobbies include watching movies, photography (I’ve been practicing taking photos with my instant camera), playing the ukulele, and collecting vinyl records. In my spare time this summer, I’ve been learning how to edit videos and created some personal projects, including a short horror film and a music video. My main goal is to join the film industry and work my way up until I can become a film director.
