Shawn Affolter is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Senate Affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy. Shawn has more than a decade of experience in advancing pragmatic public policies in the legislative and executive branches of government, including advancing critical legislative initiatives through the U.S. Senate.
Prior to joining the Department of Energy, Shawn worked for U.S. Senator John Hoeven (R-ND). In this capacity, Shawn helped advance key energy priorities including pipeline and transmission infrastructure policies, public-private research partnerships, advanced energy technology initiatives, and federal permitting reform. In his work for Senator Hoeven, Shawn gained unique experience in advancing legislative priorities through Senate committees, including the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, where he helped manage over 200 efforts including hearings, mark-ups, oversight hearings, and considering agency nominations.
Mr. Affolter is a graduate of North Dakota State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and political science. Shawn is also a co-founder of the Pilgrim Project Foundation which advances scholarship opportunities for young adults to experience Christian pilgrimages across the world. Shawn is a native North Dakotan and has resided in the Washington, DC metropolitan area since 2008.
