This week, Secretary Moniz visited the Energy Department’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to talk about science, innovation and national security. As his part of this first trip as Secretary, Dr. Moniz -- along with Deputy Secretary Poneman -- held an all hands meeting with employees from the site, met with National Lab directors from across the Department and toured some of the facilities at Oak Ridge National Lab and the Y-12 National Security Complex.

The photo gallery shows highlights of the Secretary’s tour, which included visiting the Spallation Neutron Source, the world’s most powerful pulsed neutron scattering equipment. This facility is helping us to look inside -- and better understand the properties -- of the advanced materials needed to harness and store energy from clean and renewable sources of energy. Secretary Moniz also had the opportunity to visit the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL), one of the Department’s Energy Innovation Hubs. CASL is working to improve nuclear reactors through sophisticated computer-based modeling and simulation.
