Women in Cybersecurity

The Office of the Chief Information Officer is hosting sessions throughout the month to celebrate women in cybersecurity and embracing diversity in the workforce. These sessions include March 3 “Showcase of Women-Led Cyber Efforts Across the Department”, March 10 “Embracing Diversity and Overcoming Adversity”, March 24 “Building the Cybersecurity Workforce”, and March 31 “Security DOE Control Systems”. To receive an invite for these last two panels, email ciso@hq.doe.gov

Women in Utilities

March 12, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) is bringing together women who are leaders in the utility industry to discuss their experience leading their organizations through unexpected challenges and navigating the demands of a changing industry. The discussion will shared perspectives on how utilities foster diversity in their organizations. Participants included Tina Ko, vice president of transmissions marketing and sales at BPA, Libby Calnon, general manager, of Hood River Electric Cooperative, Jackie Flowers, director of Tacoma Public Utilities, Maria Pope, president & CEO of General Electric, Amy Reese, operations division chief for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle, Debra Smith, general manager & CEO of Seattle City Light, and Lena Wittier, general manager & CEO of Clark Public Utilities.

Women in STEM Virtual Event

Later this month, Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm will participate in a conversation about women in STEM and innovation. Hosted by the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity. Details will be available on twitter.com/energy.

Spark a Future Twitter Chat

March 18, 12 p.m. PST, follow #WomenTalkSTEM and join some of the Department of Energy’s staff to talk about women in STEM. Hosted by the National Girls Collaborative Project and Million Girls Moonshot, this conversation features AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors to share how their work impacts the world, challenges they overcame, and advice they’d give their 10-yr year-old selves.

Finding Your Path Women in Climate Action Careers

March 31, 5 p.m. ET: STEM Rising is hosting a livestream on YouTube and Zoom to talk about energy justice and careers in climate action. Learn how you can get a job in climate action and hear stories about career pathways. Speakers include Marcey Hoover, director of Energy and Homeland Security Programs at Sandia National Laboratories, Nicole Mendoza, senior researcher for Wind Energy Systems at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Wahleah Johns, senior advisor for the Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs, Dr. Shuchi Talitichief of staff for the Office of Fossil Energy, Erika Roesleratmospheric and climate scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, and Ingid Rosario Gregory, group manager for the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education. Register to join.  

Valiant Women of the Vote

March 31, the Savannah River Site’s Office of Civil Rights is hosting a dialogue with Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, Ppresident of Paine College, Michael Budney, Savannah River Site Mmanager, and employees of the site to discuss women’s suffrage.  

For Our Employees

Across the National Laboratories, there are employee resources groups for our employees to network, collaborate, conduct outreach, and convene resources, including many focused on women’s leadership and equity. At Brookhaven National Laboratory, events are running throughout the month through the Brookhaven Women in Science group, and the group led “Girl Power in STEM: Choose to Challenge” for the public earlier this month.
