Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) accelerates development and facilitates deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and market-based solutions that strengthen U.S. energy security, environmental quality, and economic vitality.

Office of Electricity

The Office of Electricity (OE) provides national leadership to ensure that the Nation's energy delivery system is secure, resilient and reliable. OE works to develop new technologies to improve the infrastructure that brings electricity into our homes, offices, and factories, and the federal and state electricity policies and programs that shape electricity system planning and market operations.

Office of Fossil Energy

The Office of Fossil Energy is responsible for several high-priority initiatives including implementation of the $2 billion, 10-year Clean Coal Power Initiative to develop a new generation of environmentally sound clean coal technologies, the Fossil Energy elements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve and Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, both key emergency response tools available to the President to protect Americans from energy supply disruptions.

Office of Nuclear Energy

The Office of Nuclear Energy's (NE) primary mission is to advance nuclear power as a resource capable of making major contributions in meeting our Nation's energy supply, environmental, and energy security needs. We seek to resolve technical, cost, safety, security and regulatory issues through research, development and demonstration. By focusing on the development of advanced nuclear technologies, NE supports the Administration's goals of providing domestic sources of secure energy, reducing greenhouse gases, and enhancing national security.

Loan Programs Office

The Department of Energy's Loan Programs—administered by LPO—enable DOE to work with private companies and lenders to mitigate the financing risks associated with clean energy projects, and thereby encourage their development on a broader and much-needed scale.

The Loan Programs consist of three separate programs managed by two offices, the Loan Guarantee Program Office (LGP) and the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program Office. LPO originates, guarantees, and monitors loans to support clean energy projects through these programs.

Office of Science

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science is the lead federal agency supporting fundamental scientific research for energy and the Nation's largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences.

The Office of Science portfolio has two principal thrusts: direct support of scientific research and direct support of the development, construction, and operation of unique, open-access scientific user facilities.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE & TECHNOLOGY OFFICE

The Artificial Intelligence & Technology Office (AITO), the Department of Energy’s center for artificial intelligence, will accelerate the delivery of AI-enabled capabilities, scale the Department-wide development of AI, synchronize AI applications to advance the agency’s core missions, and expand public and private sector strategic partnerships, all in support of American AI leadership.

OFFICE OF CYBERSECURITY, ENERGY SECURITY, AND EMERGENCY REPSONSE

The Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) leads the Department of Energy’s emergency preparedness and coordinated response to disruptions to the energy sector, including physical and cyber-attacks, natural disasters, and man-made events.

ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS AGENCY - ENERGY

The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) advances high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment. ARPA-E awardees are unique because they are developing entirely new ways to generate, store, and use energy.

OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

The Office of Environmental Management's (EM) mission is to address the nation’s Cold War environmental legacy resulting from five decades of nuclear weapons production and government-sponsored nuclear energy research.  This legacy includes some of the world’s most dangerous radioactive sites with large amounts of radioactive wastes, spent nuclear fuel (SNF), excess plutonium and uranium, thousands of contaminated facilities, and contaminated soil and groundwater. Created in 1989, EM has the responsibility for completing the cleanup of this Cold War legacy and managing the remaining nuclear materials.

OFFICE OF INDIAN ENERGY POLICY AND PROGRAMS

The Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs is authorized to fund and implement a variety of programmatic activities that assist American Indian Tribes and Alaska Native villages with energy development, capacity building, energy cost reduction, and electrification of Indian lands and homes.

OFFICE OF LEGACY MANAGEMENT

The U.S. Department of Energy is committed to managing its responsibilities associated with the legacy of World War II and the Cold War. This legacy includes radioactive and chemical waste, environmental contamination, and hazardous material at over 100 sites across the country. The Department has taken major steps toward fulfilling our commitments to clean up this environmental legacy by successfully implementing an accelerated environmental remediation program. For the first time, the Department is faced with larger scale closings of a series of entire facilities. In order to effectively manage remaining legacy responsibilities and to fulfill commitments to our former contractor work force, the Department established the Office of Legacy Management (LM).

The Office of Legacy Management was formally established as a new DOE element on December 15, 2003. This Office is responsible for ensuring that DOE's post-closure responsibilities are met and for providing DOE programs for long-term surveillance and maintenance, records management, work force restructuring and benefits continuity, property management, land use planning, and community assistance.
