Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will host an Award Ceremony and Symposium on Energy Security at Department Headquarters on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Forrestal Auditorium. The event, held on the 37th anniversary of the Department’s formal opening in 1977, and on the first day of Energy Action Month this year, pays tribute to the first Secretary of Energy, the late James R. Schlesinger, and will address emerging energy security issues.
Secretary Moniz will make remarks and present a new James R. Schlesinger Medal for Energy Security. The Medal honors an individual’s distinguished contributions to advancing our understanding of the threats, opportunities, and energy policy choices impacting the domestic and international energy security interests of the United States through analysis, policy, or practice.
Following presentation of the Medal and remarks by the recipient, there will be a Symposium from 10:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. comprised of two eminent panels. The first panel will focus on energy policy from the founding of the Department in the 1970s to the present and will be chaired by John Deutch with panelists Lynn Coleman, Charles Curtis and Stuart Eizenstat. The second panel looks forward from today at the energy security future and will be chaired by John Hamre with panelists Jim Hackett, John Podesta, Linda Stuntz, Frank Verrastro and Daniel Yergin. The Secretary will then make closing remarks.
