Statement by Press Secretary Craig Stevens in Response to Senator Domenici’s Proposed Nuclear Fuel Management and Disposal Act

“We are encouraged by the ongoing, public support that Senator Domenici gives Yucca Mountain and the promise of nuclear energy.  The Department strongly supports many of the provisions in his bill.  The bill would move the ball forward in helping the Federal Government fulfill its obligations under the current law, and would help open Yucca Mountain as the nation’s permanent repository for spent nuclear fuel.

“Yucca Mountain is the most studied piece of real estate in the world and continues to prove itself as a safe and suitable location for spent fuel.  There is growing consensus among legislators, business leaders, members of the energy sector, and environmentally conscientious citizens that nuclear energy is needed to provide clean and affordable power that will allow our economy to grow.  However, in order for a nuclear renaissance to occur, we must fulfill our responsibilities to safely, securely, and permanently store spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste.

“We look forward to working with Senator Domenici on his bill and on other proposed provisions that were included within the Administration's legislative proposal concerning Yucca Mountain.”
