WASHINGTON, DC – Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham recently recognized the winners of the Secretary of Energy’s Fourth Annual Project Management Awards at a ceremony at the Department of Energy. The awards acknowledge outstanding performance based on successful completion or near completion of a project and overall management of the project or program.
“I am very proud of the tremendous progress our department has made in improving its management performance,” Secretary Abraham said. “As these awards highlight, one of our great successes has been a strong focus on the importance of sound and professional project management which has required resourceful, innovative, and dedicated, hard-working teams. I applaud and thank each individual for all they have done to improve the department’s performance, and achieve our important energy, science, and national security missions.”
The three winning teams receiving this year’s project management awards are:
Stanford Positron Electron Asymmetric Ring 3 Upgrade Project Team, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
Secretary’s Excellence in Acquisition Award
The project team is commended for the successful completion of the upgrade three months ahead of schedule and within the $58 million budget. The facility will be used in the study of solid-state physics, materials science, environmental science, structural biology and chemistry. This is the first accelerator facility project collaboration between DOE and NIH.
Tritium Facility Modernization and Consolidation Project Team, Savannah River Site
Secretary’s Award of Achievement
The project team maintained a “breakthrough” philosophy throughout this $142 million project life, which allowed it to successfully deal with numerous challenges and still meet its objectives within cost and schedule -- to relocate, consolidate and modernize tritium gas processing functions from a 50-year old first-generation facility to a location within a newer, currently operating second-generation facility.
Laboratory for Comparative and Functional Genomics Project Team, Oak RidgeSite Office
Secretary’s Acquisition Improvement Award
The project provides a modern gene function research facility and protection for the genetic mutant mouse lines created during the past 50 years and supports the Department of Energy research programs. The $14.4 million project started in November 2000 and was completed on schedule in September 2003 with a cost savings of $380,000. The success of this project was due in large part to the integration of a specialized team knowledgeable in the design and construction of vivariums.
Other project teams receiving honorable mention include:
- The National Nuclear Security Administration’s Emergency Operations Center Replacement Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory
- The National Nuclear Security Administration’s Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Applications/Microelectronics Development Lab Retooling sub-project at Sandia National Laboratory
- The Office of Environmental Management’s Plutonium Finishing Plant, Stabilization and Packaging Project at the Hanford Site
- The Office of Environmental Management’s Waste Pits Remedial Action Project at the Fernald Site
- The Office of Environmental Management’s FB Line Plutonium Packaging and Stabilization at the Savannah River Site
The Secretary’s Project Management Awards Program was initiated in the fall of 2000 to recognize individuals and teams whose outstanding accomplishments and commitment in acquisition management deserve special recognition.
