Recovery Act Helps Y-12 Exceed Cleanup Goal at Manhattan Project-Era Building

Beta 4, one of the oldest and largest buildings at the Y-12 National Security Complex, recently reached a significant cleanup milestone. The second floor of the building, more than 82,000 square feet, has been cleared of large equipment and waste from Cold War operations.

DOE and State Sign Natural Resources Damages Settlement Agreement

Officials from TDEC and DOE signed a Natural Resources Damages settlement agreement. The signed document designates DOE’s plans to compensate the state for ecological and human use impacts associated with contaminant releases from facilities at the Oak Ridge Reservation.

Final Recovery Act-Funded Demolition Underway at Y-12

The final and most high-profile demolition funded at Y-12 by the Recovery Act continues this week. Building 9211, one of seven buildings in Y-12’s vacant Biology Complex, was constructed in 1945 to house biological research. The 83,471-square-foot facility has not been used since the early 2000s, and it began falling apart in recent years.

Recovery Act Project at Y-12 Meets Another Milestone

Building 9220, the second of four buildings within Y-12's Biology Complex, was demolished. The completed work eliminates another unneeded facility at Y-12 and eliminates the risk associated with the deteriorated facility.

Recovery Cleanup Project at Y-12 Leaves Alpha 5 with an Empty Feeling

The Alpha 5 Legacy Material Disposition project at Y-12 recently celebrated the early completion of a significant project milestone. The fourth floor of Alpha 5 has been cleared of 5,430 containers of legacy materials, which includes any equipment and materials not bolted or secured to the facility.

DOE Awards Contract for Building K-33 Demolition

DOE awards LATA-Sharp Remediation Services a fixed-price task order valued at $51 million to demolish K-33. The project is expected to be complete by March 1, 2012.

DOE Awards More than $16 Million for Recovery Act Cleanup at ORNL

Through the Recovery Act, DOE awards $16.8 million contract to for environmental cleanup operations at ORNL. Under this contract, EM will demolish 34 facilities in the ORNL central campus area.

First ARRA-Funded Demolition at Y-12 Begins

Y-12 began its first ARRA-funded demolition project, Building 9735. The facility was built in 1946 as an engineering laboratory.
