Solar Decathlon Homes Open for Media Tour

Washington, DC – The Department of Energy will welcome members of the media to the National Mall on Wednesday, October 7 for a sneak peek at the 2009 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.  Before the houses open to the public, members of the media are invited to meet the teams and tour the twenty solar-powered homes built by university-led teams from around the world.  The Solar Decathlon challenges teams to build high-efficiency, solar-powered homes.  Over the next ten days, teams will compete in ten contests, testing the design, efficiency, and performance of the homes they have built.

Who: 20 university-led teams
Department of Energy staff and sponsors
What: Media Preview and Open House
Where: The Solar Village
National Mall between 10th and 14th Streets
When: Wednesday, October 7, 11:00am – 2:00pm
RSVP: Media wishing to attend should RSVP with name, outlet, email, and phone number to Thomas.Welch@hq.doe.gov

**Hard hats may be required for some houses.  Protective gear is available on-site.**

The solar homes will then be open daily for public tours October 9-18, except October 14, when they will be closed for competition purposes.
