Fact Sheet: Energy Star® LG Electronics, USA, Settlement
- The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced an agreement with LG Electronics, USA, Inc. (LG) to resolve concerns related to energy usage measurements reported by LG on its French Door refrigerators with through-the-door ice and water service. As part of the settlement, LG has agreed to revise its energy ratings on certain refrigerators based on guidance from DOE.
- LG Models: LFX25950, LFX25960, LFX25971, LFX23961, LFX21960, LFX21971, LFX21980, LFX25980, LMX21981, and LMX25981 (all are French Door refrigerators with through-the-door ice and water service) are being voluntarily and temporarily withdrawn from the ENERGY STAR® program, along with any and all similar or derivative models made for any LG Original Equipment Manufacturer customers whose products are sold in the United States.
- A similar program will be implemented for comparable Kenmore-brand TRIO models designed and manufactured by LG Electronics. This program only affects Kenmore French Door models with ice and water dispensing through the door having model numbers starting with 795.
- Under the agreement, LG will:
- Offer consumers a free in-home modification to improve the energy efficiency of these products (though, even with the modification, they will not be ENERGY STAR® qualified).
- Make payments to consumers covering the energy cost difference between the new measured energy usage of the product and the amount stated on the original Energy Guide label. LG will also issue these payments to consumers for future incremental energy usage for the expected useful life of the refrigerator up to 14 years.
- Remove unsold models from retailer stock and modify them before they are sold to ensure that these products satisfy the obligations of the agreement
- In cooperation with retailers, LG will attempt to contact consumers who purchased the affected models by mail. Consumers may also contact LG online or by phone at 1-888-848-1266.
- ENERGY STAR® is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Results are already adding up. Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR®, saved enough energy in 2007 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million cars all while saving $16 billion on their utility bills.
