WASHINGTON, DC –Today the United States deposited its instrument of ratification for the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage (CSC) with the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).  The CSC is an international treaty developed to create a global legal framework for allocating responsibility for compensating nuclear damage resulting from a nuclear incident and for assuring, in the unlikely event of such an incident, the prompt availability of meaningful compensation with a minimum of litigation and other burdens.  U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman issued the following statement:

"Ratification of the CSC by the United States marks a major milestone towards the creation of a global nuclear liability regime and I am pleased it has been deposited with the IAEA.  I urge other countries to join the United States in ratifying this important international treaty that would put into place the legal certainty necessary for expanding nuclear power globally.  Clean, safe, emissions-free nuclear power is an essential part of our national and global energy mix and its expansion is necessary for a secure energy future."
