Secretary of Energy to Honor Students and Promote U.S. Competitiveness at DOE’s 18th Annual National Science Bowl

WASHINGTON, DC – On Monday, May 5, 2008, U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman will deliver remarks at the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl® final competition to highlight the President’s commitment to investing in our next generation of scientists, engineers and educators so America can remain at the forefront of innovation and successfully compete in the 21st century global marketplace.  Secretary Bodman will present awards to the winning team, who will receive a science-related trip.

The DOE National Science Bowl® is the only science competition in the United States sponsored by a federal agency.  Each participating team emerged from one of the event’s 67 regional high school Science Bowls to earn an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the National Finals.  This year, more than 12,000 students in 41 states competed in regional high school Science Bowl events, designed to encourage students to excel in science and math, and to pursue careers in those fields.  Over 130,000 students have participated in the competition throughout its 18 year history.
