Senior Department of Energy Official in New York to Sign Agreement with The Green Grid to Increase Energy Efficiency in Data Centers
Media availability to immediately follow

WASHINGTON, DC – Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 18, 2007, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Alexander Karsner will be joined by John Tucillo of The Green Grid, at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote energy efficiency in the information technology sector.  This MOU focuses on developing best practices and guidelines for improving energy use in electronic data centers.

Electronic data centers form the backbone of the information economy, but also consume a growing amount of energy – last year data centers used 1.5 percent of all electricity in the United States.  The Green Grid is a consortium of information technology companies seeking to lower the overall consumption of power in data centers around the globe.

*NOTE: To gain entry into the NYSE, members of the media must pre-register/RSVP by 5PM today to Ellen Luttrell (202-403-4130 OR ellen.luttrell@ee.doe.gov).  Upon arrival at the NYSE, all pre-registered members of the press must show valid press credentials as well as a government-issued form of ID, such as a passport or driver’s license, before going through security.
