EIS-0373: Draft Environmental Impact Statement

Proposed Consolidation of Nuclear Operations Related to Production of Radioisotope Power Systems

The purpose and need for agency action is to consolidate RPS production at a single site to reduce the security threat in a cost-effective manner, improve program flexibility, and to reduce interstate transportation of special nuclear material (SNM)1 and other radioactive material. The infrastructure required to produce RPSs currently exists, or is planned to exist, at three geographically separate and distant DOE sites: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Tennessee; Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), New Mexico; and Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Idaho; (formerly known as Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory-West, Idaho).
