The State of Michigan has long been synonymous with the American automobile.  Today, many of the auto companies headquartered in the state are partnering with the Department of Energy to develop advanced energy-efficient auto technologies such as hybrid electric and fuel cell vehicles.  Michigan ranks tenth in nuclear power generation among the states.  Its three power plants combine to provide over a quarter of the entire state’s electricity.

A portion of the funds from the State Energy Program are allocated by formula among the states.  To apply for a grant from the remaining funds, each Governor is required to write a letter to the Secretary of Energy explaining that the state will pursue policies to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy as outlined in Section 410 page 32 of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
