The DOE Office of Indian Energy is offering an energy track at the 25th Annual BIA Tribal Providers Conference Dec. 2-3, 2015, in Anchorage, Alaska. The track will feature breakout sessions on a variety of topics to help tribal energy leaders and professionals make informed decisions about energy projects.

Speakers will include DOE Office of Indian Energy Program Managers Givey Kochanowski and Lizana Pierce, as well as representatives from DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, numerous federal and state agencies, regional corporations, and more. Highlighted sessions include:

  • Understanding Federal and State Energy-Focused Agencies: It’s all Greek to me. If you want help navigating the alphabet soup of government programs and agencies, this session is for you. It will provide an overview of many of the agencies providing energy support to tribal leaders and staff members.
  • Innovation in Locally-Sourced Energy – Clean Coal and Waste-to-Energy. The DOE Office of Indian Energy embraces an all-the-above strategy in helping tackle the extremely high cost of energy in rural Alaska. Kicking off a yearlong education focus for DOE in Alaska, this session examines two potential local sources of low-cost and abundant energy: Alaska’s clean, low-sulfur coal, which is exported globally to help other nations meet their energy needs in a more environmentally friendly fashion, and municipal solid waste and biosolids, which can pose environment, health, and sanitation challenges if not properly managed.
  • Save Money Today – Energy Conservation and Efficiency Successes in Alaska. Conservation and efficiency represent the first and most critical step in addressing Alaska’s energy challenges. In a time of extremely limited budgets and no shortage of studies, this session offers a refreshing change of perspective. Learn how fellow Alaskans are making a difference today with real action and savings.
  • Sun, Wind, and Rain – Technology Updates and Projects Across Alaska. Alaska is a state of innovation and ingenuity. Learn about renewable energy projects across our Great Land that are driving down energy costs, creating local jobs, and helping transition Alaska to a cleaner energy future. This session is designed for tribal leaders and staff seeking proven models and success stories they can bring home and share with others to spark new ideas.
  • Energy Education and Communication Strategies. This session presents ready-to-use tools to encourage meaningful energy dialogue and spur community action. In addition to understanding how free DOE technical assistance for strategic community energy planning can benefit rural Alaska, attendees will learn what information and formats are most useful to bringing new energy and ideas to a community.

Sessions will generally include 15–20 minute presentations followed by roundtable discussions. 2015 DOE Office of Indian Energy Strategic Technical Assistance Response Team Alaska communities and DOE Alaska Energy Ambassadors will be given priority attendance at the Thursday sessions.
