The Office of Audits and Inspections provides all internal and contracted audit activities, inspections, and reviews for Department programs and operations, including the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The Office also performs all OIG intelligence oversight and reporting as required by Executive Order and statue. The Office works as an agent for positive change and continuous improvement in the Department’s management and program operations; and strives to provide reliable, credible financial and performance information to senior Department management, the Congress and taxpayers.

The Office of Audits and Inspections consists of a Headquarters organization, three Audit Divisions and two Inspection Divisions aligned with the Department’s critical missions in national security, energy, science and environmental quality. This organizational structure helps to ensure that audit and inspection work provides comprehensive coverage over Department organizations, programs and activities, while meeting the Department’s evolving needs and organizational structure changes.

Audits performed fall into two broad categories: performance audits and financial audits. Performance audits provide independent assessments of an organization, program or activity. Inspections are usually focused on fact-finding and analysis regarding specified management issues/topics; or reviews of administrative allegations for Department programs and operations.

The Office consists of a Headquarters office in Washington, DC. The three Audit Divisions have audit groups located in Germantown, MD; Oak Ridge, TN; Aiken, SC; Chicago, IL; Richland, WA; Idaho Falls, ID; Pittsburgh, PA; Las Vegas, NV; Albuquerque, NM; Los Alamos, NM; Denver, CO; and Livermore, CA. The two Inspection Divisions have inspection groups located in Oak Ridge, TN; Aiken, SC; Albuquerque, NM; and Livermore, CA.
