Performance Objective:

To verify that facility equipment and piping are labeled in a manner such that facility personnel are able to positively identify equipment they operate.  To ensure that an effective labeling program is in effect to reduce operator and maintenance errors from incorrect identification of equipment, to increase training effectiveness by tracing the actual facility system as opposed to tracing its schematic, and to reduce personnel exposure to radiation and hazardous materials. This assessment provides a basis for evaluating the effectiveness of the contractor’s program for labeling equipment and piping and for establishing compliance with DOE requirements.

Criteria:

  • From DOE-STD-1044-93, “Guide to Good Practices for Equipment and Piping Labeling, 12/98:
  • Equipment, components, and piping that require labeling are identified by the facility.
  • Label information meets regulatory requirements and is consistent with facility procedures.
  • Label materials and means of attachment are compatible with the components and environment where they are used.
  • Labels are properly placed and oriented to enhance readability and component identification.
  • Checks to verify that labels are correct are included in designated operating procedures.
  • Procedures are established to replace lost or damaged labels and to acquire new labels when needed.
