DOE Closes Investigation of Arcelik's Blomberg Refrigerator

The Department of Energy has closed its investigation into the energy efficiency of Arcelik's Blomberg refrigerator-freezer model # BRFB1450. The Department opened this investigation based on a complaint. DOE subpoenaed information from Arcelik, reviewed Arcelik's response, and performed its own testing of this model.

Based on our investigation and test results, DOE has determined this model to be compliant with federal energy conservation standards.

DOE Extends Comment Period on Notice of Inquiry Under the Energy Independence and Security Act

Today, in response to a formal request, General Counsel Scott Blake Harris approved a 30-day extension of the public comment period on DOE's Notice of Inquiry (75 FR 43945) soliciting comment on the development of regulations to carry out section 934 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which implements the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage.

Westinghouse and Fuzhou Permitted to Restart Distribution of Light Bulb Products

The Department has issued Notices of Allowance  to Westinghouse Lighting Corporation and Fuzhou Sunlight Lighting Electrical Appliance Company determining, based on corrected test data provided by Westinghouse, that the incandescent reflector lamps listed below are compliant with the federal energy conservation standard and may be sold in the United States.

DOE Takes Steps to Fulfill Obligation Under the Energy Independence and Security Act

Seeks Comments on the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage

Today, as required by Congress, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) soliciting comments from nuclear suppliers, nuclear insurance providers, and other stakeholders on the development of regulations to carry out section 934 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), which implements the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage (CSC).

DOE Launches Public Test Procedure Guidance Website

The Department of Energy this week launched a new online database offering guidance on the Department’s test procedures for appliances and commercial equipment.  The new database will provide a publicly accessible forum for anyone with questions about -- or needing clarification of -- DOE’s test procedures.  This new online resource will also ensure that all manufacturers and members of the public are equally and immediately aware of the Department’s interpretations of its test procedures.

DOE Replies Support NRC Commissioners and Authority to Withdraw Yucca Application

In a reply brief filed with the NRC today, DOE explained that the arguments that it lacked authority to withdraw the pending Yucca Mountain license application are uniformly without merit. DOE's reply brief is available here. In a separate filing, DOE explained that there is no basis for arguments that two NRC Commissioners should recuse themselves from the Yucca proceeding.

DOE to Provide Enhanced Public Notice for Environmental Assessments

To improve transparency and public participation in the NEPA process, the Department of Energy has decided to provide online publication and immediate electronic notification of all draft Environmental Assessments (EAs) that are being made available for public comment.  When the Department makes a draft EA available for public review, it will publish the draft EA online and provide immediate electronic notice to members of the public who have signed up to receive such notice.

DOE Extends Deadline for Submission of Smart Grid RFI Reply Comments

Due to an unexpectedly large public response, the Department of Energy will extend by two weeks the deadline for submission of reply comments in response to its two Smart Grid RFIs.  Originally set at July 26, the new deadline will be August 9, 2010.

DOE Makes Filing with NRC in Support OF Authority to Withdraw Yucca Application

DOE today urged the NRC to conclude that DOE has the legal authority to withdraw the pending Yucca Mountain license application.  DOE argued that the NRC should review and reverse the contrary administrative board decision, which, DOE explained, is filled with multiple legal errors.

DOE Closes Investigation of Whirlpool's Maytag Refrigerator

The Department of Energy has closed its investigation into the energy efficiency of Whirlpool's Maytag refrigerator-freezer model "MSD2578VE." The Department opened this investigation and requested testing data from Whirlpool based on a complaint (April 12, 2010, "DOE Opens Three Investigations into Alleged Refrigerator Efficiency Violations").
