RICHLAND, Wash. – A woman-owned small business prime contractor to EM’s Office of River Protection has been named one of America’s safest companies for 2013 by EHS Today magazine.

Advanced Technologies and Laboratories International, Inc. (ATL) is responsible for operating Hanford’s 222-S Analytical Laboratory, a 70,000-square-foot facility that handles highly radioactive samples for purposes of organic, inorganic and radio-chemistry analyses. It contains 11 hot cells, which gives the lab the capability to remotely handle highly radioactive samples of tank waste while minimizing radiation dose to workers.

ATL was one of 15 companies selected for the award by the magazine, which covers trends, management strategies, regulatory news and new products geared to safe and healthy work sites.

"Safety is an integral part of ATL's values and culture,” ATL President Jou Hwang said. “As the president, I appreciate the recognition of being named one of America's safest companies.”

To be considered for the award, ATL demonstrated innovative solutions to safety challenges; injury and illness rates significantly lower than the industry average; comprehensive training programs; evidence that prevention of incidents is the cornerstone of the safety process; excellent communication internally and externally about the value of safety; and a way to substantiate the benefits of the safety process.
