The DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Office supports a variety of research, development, and deployment efforts in partnership with our national laboratories and private partners. The success of these projects relies on the hard work and commitment of experts at these organizations. To recognize the hard work of a number of individuals who have made contributions in advancing energy-efficient vehicles, VTO recently presented the following honors at its 2014 Annual Merit Review and Peer Evaluation Meeting.
Lifetime Distinguished Achievement
Larry Johnson (Argonne National Laboratory): An Argonne Distinguished Fellow, Mr. Johnson has worked with VTO for more than 35 years. During that time, he has managed the Advanced Vehicle Transportation Competitions, such as the recently finished EcoCAR 2, and has been instrumental in establishing two bilateral agreements with China.
Dennis Siebers (Sandia National Laboratory): Mr. Siebers’ work has greatly enhanced scientists’ understanding of the combustion and emissions process and influenced research worldwide. He has been a leader in applying advanced laser and optical-based diagnostics. He was also fundamental in developing a combustion research partnership of 12 major automotive and engine manufacturers, 5 energy companies, and 6 national laboratories that effectively transfers technology.
Special Recognition Awards
Stacey Davis (Oak Ridge National Laboratory): Ms. Davis has been vital in the work to analyze and interpret the consistently high-quality data that feeds into the Transportation Energy Data Book, the VTO Market Report, and the Fact of the Week feature.
Wendy Dafoe (National Renewable Energy Laboratory): As a key member of the Clean Cities team and a fundamental leader in the launch of the Alternative Fuels Data Center, Ms. Dafoe has been a leader in alternative fuels deployment and outreach for more than 25 years.
Research and Development Awards
Ted Bohn (Argonne National Laboratory): Mr. Bohn’s work with the SAE J2954 wireless charging committee and development of low-cost sub-meters for application in vehicles and charging infrastructure have greatly furthered plug-in electric vehicle-grid connectivity, interoperability, and wireless charging.
Gi-Heon Kim (National Renewable Energy Laboratory): Mr. Kim’s research provided the foundation for VTO’s Computer Aided Engineering for Electric Drive Batteries Program. It is helping to improve the scientific community’s understanding of issues relating to lithium-ion batteries’ safety and performance.
David Koeberlein (Cummins): Mr. Koeberlein’s leadership on the SuperTruck project was instrumental to Cummins and Peterbilt’s success in exceeding the goal of improving freight efficiency by 50% on the road. In fact, their vehicle actually demonstrated an improvement of 76% while remaining on budget.
Jun Qu (Oak Ridge National Laboratory): Mr. Qu has led two teams that have made substantial breakthroughs in lubricant technologies. These technologies have the potential to deliver a 2-percent fuel economy improvement in both future vehicles and the more than 250 million vehicles currently on the road.
Andy Wereszczak (Oak Ridge National Laboratory): Mr. Wereszczak’s work in ceramics and brittle materials supports vehicle OEMs and their suppliers in the development of devices related to high temperature packaging for power electronics, electric motors, and traction drive systems. In addition, his efforts are key to accelerating the utilization of wide band-gap devices and the development of advanced processing and manufacturing techniques.
Skip Yeakel (Volvo Trucks North America): As an essential leader in Volvo’s participation in the 21st Century Truck Partnership since 1999, Mr. Yeakel has been instrumental in proposing feasible goals for research and development, including the SuperTruck initiative.
