Convergent Science Inc. (CSI) is using Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Multi-Zone Combustion Model (MCM) to help automotive engineers develop the next generation of high-efficiency, low-emission vehicles. MCM, developed with EERE support, enables faster simulation of the chemical processes that take place within internal combustion engines. MCM has reduced the time needed to run a combustion simulation on a smaller-scale computer system to hours or days, instead of the weeks or months required by older methods, without compromising accuracy. Faster simulations will allow engineers to spend less time waiting for results and more time designing better engines, speeding the development of efficient and environmentally friendly highway transportation technologies.
