In 2014, the U.S. Departments of Energy, Navy, and Agriculture announced that Emerald Biofuels, Fulcrum Energy, and Red Rock Biofuels have been awarded contracts to construct biorefineries capable of producing renewable jet diesel for the Department of Defense.

The partnership between the DOE, Navy and USDA, and private industry to develop drop in biofuels helps make cost- competitive fuel supply a reality, and strengthens the nation capability to lead the global clean energy market.  The feedstock used to power these facilities comes from municipal solid waste, woody biomass, and waste oils and fats, and will be converted into more than 100 million gallons of biofuels annually. This means several hundred full- time, professional jobs for engineers, plant technicians and construction workers.  Additionally, the renewable jet fuel and diesel produced from these facilities are fully compatible with existing engines in use today, ensuring cost- effective best practices.

The Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) works with a broad spectrum of industrial, academic, agricultural, and nonprofit partners across the United States to develop and deploy commercially viable, high-performance biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower from renewable biomass resources in America to reduce our dependence on imported oil.

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) success stories highlight the positive impact of its work with businesses, industry partners, universities, research labs, and other entities.
