A critical barrier to effective nationwide adoption of energy efficient technologies is the limited use of comprehensive energy performance data for data-driven decision making and energy efficiency program optimization. Identifying the data needed to measure and communicate results is the first step of data collection. This could include information on facilities/buildings and their constituent spaces, asset level information, operating characteristics, and energy consumption data.

EERE hosted a two-part webinar series to cover energy data management. Part 1 was held on Sept. 20, and covered the creation of a comprehensive energy end-use inventory, improving utility data access, and identifying other sources of consumption data. This step in the benchmarking process will help public sector organizations with benchmarking requirements through identifying best data collection and tracking practices.
