Steam Tool Suite Training – 2-hour workshop

Availability: Online self-paced workshop

This course introduces DOE's Steam System Tool Suite, including the Steam System Scoping Tool (SSST), Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT), and 3E Plus® Insulation Tool.

Visit the DOE Learning Management System to access this online self-paced workshop. Users are required to register.

Steam End User – 1 day workshop

Availability: Onsite instructor-led and online self-paced workshop

This course covers the operation of typical steam systems and discusses methods of system efficiency improvement. The training is designed for plant personnel, such as energy managers, steam system supervisors, engineers, and equipment operators, who have steam system responsibilities in industrial and institutional plants. The course covers three key areas of potential system improvement:

  • Steam Generation Efficiency
  • Resource Utililization Effectiveness
  • Steam Distribution System Losses

The course introduces the SSST and the SSAT. The steam opportunity assessment tools developed by DOE uses the Steam System Survey Guide (May 2002) as a technical reference. The training also introduces the 3E Plus® insulation appraisal software and a course example is presented that uses this software.

If you are interested in attending an instructor-led workshop, see the Training Calendar for upcoming sessions in your area. Visit the DOE Learning Management System if you are interested in taking an online self-paced workshop. Users are required to register on the LMS to access trainings. For more information, see an explanation of how to register for an account on the LMS.

Become a Qualified Steam Tool Specialist – 2½ day workshop

Availability: Onsite instructor-led

DOE has developed Steam System Specialist Qualification training for steam service providers who are interested in becoming proficient in using the Steam tools and references, including SSST, SSAT, Steam System Survey Guide (May 2002), and 3E Plus® insulation appraisal software.

Specialists are recognized for their ability to perform a global investigation, and identify and quantify potential steam system improvement opportunities. To successfully complete the training course participants must pass an exam demonstrating their understanding of steam system survey principles, implications and projects identified by using the steam software tools, and common evaluations required to perform insulation investigations. To successfully complete the Specialist Qualification Training course, a participant must understand:

  • Steam System Scoping Tool (SSST)
    • Accurate collection and input of data for use with the tool
    • Appropriate utilization of the software
    • Interpretation of software results
  • Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT)
    • Accurate collection and input of data for use with the tool
    • Development of representative system models
    • SSAT limitations
    • Individual project identification
    • Development of practical methods to accomplish the appropriate projects
  • 3E Plus®
    • Accurate data gathering for basic insulation related evaluations
    • Development of evaluation techniques related to common insulation evaluations

Class participants will receive a Prerequisite Test/Study Guide before attending the class. This Study Guide provides an indicator of the skill levels necessary to successfully complete the Specialist Qualification training. Completion of this Study Guide is highly recommended, but is not a requirement to take the training. Completion of Steam End User training is also recommended prior to participating in the Specialist Qualification training class, which covers the majority of the Specialist Qualification training prerequisites.
