AMO Partners Select Thirteen Projects for the High Performance Computing for Manufacturing

The Energy Department this week, in partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), announced $3.8 million to be allocated across 13 projects to use high-performance computing resources at the Department's national laboratories to improve manufacturing. The collaborations in the High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) program will address key challenges in U.S. manufacturing by applying modeling, simulation, and data analysis to the manufacturing of materials with the intent to aid in decision making, optimize processes and design, improve quality, predict performance and failure, quicken or eliminate testing, and/or shorten the time for adoption of new technologies.

The Advanced Manufacturing Office within the Department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy created and funds this program. This effort also advances President Obama's National Strategic Computing Initiative, unveiled in July 2015, which calls for public-private partnerships to increase industrial adoption of high-performance computing.

AMO Celebrates Women’s Equality Day with the Honorable Deborah L. Wince-Smith

Women’s Equality Day, August 26, is an annual celebration of the certification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. The Advanced Manufacturing Office recently sat down with one of its collaborating partners, the Honorable Deborah L. Wince-Smith, President and CEO of the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, to discuss her views on women’s equality in the manufacturing sector.

AMO collaborates with the Council on Competitiveness through the American Energy and Manufacturing Competitiveness (AEMC) partnership which is focused on innovating for a clean energy future.

DEADLINE: DOE Office of Science Small Business Programs - Letter of Intent Due – September 6

DOE’s Office of Science is sponsoring a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program funding opportunity. A Letter of Intent for Phase 1 Release 1 is due Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 5:00 PM EDT. It contains two, advanced manufacturing topics: Atomically Precise Membranes and Wide Bandgap Semiconductors.

The objectives of the SBIR/STTR programs include increasing private sector commercialization of technology developed through DOE‐supported research and development (R&D), stimulating technological innovation in the private sector, encouraging participation by women‐owned and minority‐owned small businesses, and improving the return on investment from Federally‐funded research for economic and social benefits to the nation. Phase I grants resulting from this competition will be made to small businesses with maximum award sizes of $150,000 or $225,000 depending on the topic.
