Today the Minority Educational Institution Student Partnership Program (MEISPP) intern orientation was held at Department of Energy Headquarters in Washington, DC. Students came from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Serving Institutions in states such as California, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and Puerto Rico. The interns have various academic backgrounds in the sciences and liberal arts fields.
During the orientation, students received important information regarding the type of work they would perform and the various program offices they would be assigned. Students also had the opportunity to meet with their mentors and discuss their upcoming work assignments. The interns received helpful advice from previous interns of the MEISPP program as well as DOE mentors who encouraged the students to work hard, ask questions, and fully take advantage of opportunities presented during the 10-week summer program.
Finally, Mr. William Valdez, Acting Director for the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity, stressed the importance of networking at the Department of Energy and making the most of the summer experience by engaging in thoughtful and resume-worthy work and activities.
