WASHINGTON – On Thursday, February 6, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will travel to Austin and San Antonio, Texas to highlight the President’s State of the Union Address and the Administration’s efforts to foster innovation and advanced manufacturing as key elements of the all-of-the-above energy strategy. As the President pointed out last week, the United States is rapidly moving closer to energy independence. Continued investment in innovation and advanced manufacturing will ensure that the United States continues on this path, creating a stronger economy and additional ladders of opportunity for the middle class in the process.
In Austin, the Secretary will participate in a roundtable discussion with local companies and leaders in Austin's clean energy ecosystem, including clean technology startups from the Austin Technology Incubator and the cleantech cluster development group CleanTX. Following the roundtable, the Secretary will tour of the Pike Powers Laboratory and Center for Commercialization, a testing bed and commercialization facility located near the University of Texas- Austin campus. Later, the Secretary will meet with UT-Austin students, faculty and members of the campus community to discuss innovation in manufacturing and will also touch on the importance of STEM education. The Secretary will conclude his morning by delivering remarks and taking questions from UT-Austin students, members of the campus community and the energy industry before participating in a press availability. The Secretary’s remarks will be live streamed.
Later, in San Antonio, Secretary Moniz will view posters created by local high schools and universities working on energy issues with Mayor Julian Castro before the Secretary and Mayor Castro hold a joint press availability. Following the press availability, Secretary Moniz and Mayor Castro will participate in a town hall discussion of energy issues and job creation at the University of Texas at San Antonio. After the town hall, Secretary Moniz and Mayor Castro will meet with San Antonio companies to discuss the importance of advanced manufacturing and innovation. Before he departs San Antonio, the Secretary will also sit down one-on-one with Mayor Castro.
Throughout the visit, the Secretary will highlight the Administration’s commitment to the all-of-the-above energy strategy, specifically focusing on efforts to expand advanced manufacturing in the United States. As the President stated in his State of the Union Address, American manufacturers are adding jobs for the first time in over a decade, and to build on this progress, the Department of Energy will work with the President and the Administration to launch four new manufacturing institutes this year. Secretary Moniz will also highlight the President’s call to partner with states and cities to move to energy efficiency and cleaner power in order to cut carbon pollution.

In Austin, the Secretary will participate in a roundtable breakfast at the Pecan Street Research Institute with local companies, tour the Pike Powers Laboratory and Center for Commercialization, meeet with UT studets at the TACC Visualization Lab, deliver remarks and take questions from students and memberse of the UT campus community, and participate in a press availability.
In San Antonio, Secretary Moniz will participate in a poster tour with local high schools and universities working on energy issues with Mayor Julian Castro, hold a press availability and host a town hall discussion on energy issues with Mayor Castro and the UTSA campus community, meet with San Antonio companies to discuss advanced manufacturing and innovation, and sit down one-on-one with Mayor Castro.
